Our film tracks the life story of Israel Sanabria who is mostly known for almost single-handedly popularizing the term ‘Salsa’ to describe New York’s Latin music during the 1970’s. But most are unaware of Izzy’s other talents and great contributions to Latino culture.
Originally known as “Dizzy Izzy”, he began his career as a graphic designer for a fledgling label called Alegre Records. His first album cover for Johnny Pacheco’s debut recording with his new band, Pacheco y Su Charanga was artistically groundbreaking and set the standard for Latino album cover design. He followed up with an ingenious idea creating a series of covers for the Alegre All-Stars in which he used a comic strip format in which the story continued from one album cover to the other.
When Pacheco formed his own label, Fania Records, with Jerry Masucci, they called on Izzy. He designed the famous Fania logo and numerous iconic covers for the likes of Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ray Barretto, and the Fania All Stars among many others. Because of his charismatic and extroverted nature and his relationship to Pacheco and Masucci he became the official emcee for the Fania All-Stars and travelled with them all over the world spreading the
