Popenoe began his career as a director of research urban studies at Rutgers University in 1965. Four years later he took a position of an associate professor at the same university. Also David served as a chairman of the sociology department at Rutgers University from 1979 to 1985. Nowadays he is a professor of sociology emeritus and co-director of The National Marriage Project at Rutgers University.
