LIFE The Rat Pack: The Original Bad Boys

Well, it's Life. So, yes. There are lots of black and white pictures, but there is also a great history written alongside.

I learned A LOT, and by the way, the ORIGINAL Rat Pack included Humphrey Bogart, and this is talked about in the book.

Reading about some of the "groupies" (both male & female) was just as interesting -- Shirley Maclaine, Judy Garland, Sid Luft, Kirk Douglas (although not really), Angie Dickinson, Steve Lawrence, John F. Kennedy, etc.

It was also interesting to read about how Sammy Davis, Jr. was treated during this period. Remember, this was an era where the fight for Civil Rights was really coming to the forefront. Davis could perform at the Sands with the rest of the pack, but at other times, he often was not even allowed to walk in the front door.

It is clear throughout the reading that Sinatra was King, and if you did anything to "offend" Sinatra, you were out, until he figured out to "get something out of you." Case in Point: Peter Lawford and John F. Kennedy (read the book to discover more of the history of this relationship).

The Rat Pack was an informal group of singers that, in its second iteration, ultimately made films and appeared together in Las Vegas casino venues. They originated in the late 1940s and early 1950s as a group of A-list show business friends, such as Errol Flynn, Nat King Cole, Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and others who met casually at the Holmby Hills home of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.[1] In the 1960s, the group featured Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and (before falling out with Sinatra in 1962) Peter Lawford, among others. They appeared together on stage and in films in the 1950s and 1960s, including the films Ocean's 11[2] and Sergeants 3; after Lawford's expulsion, they filmed Robin and the 7 Hoods with Bing Crosby in what was to have been Lawford's role. Sinatra, Martin, and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members after Bogart's death.[3][4]
