Payapang Daigdig: A Filipino Christmas Carol of Hope
When war and destruction came to the Philippines it was Christmas season–to be exact, it was 8 December 1941. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii at 2:30 AM Philippine Time, decimating the U.S. fleet that could have protected the Philippines, then a Commonwealth under the U.S. on its way to independence. Hours later, the Japanese have commenced their invasion of the country, invading Manila on New Year’s Day 1942. In 1945, after more than three years of grueling Japanese occupation, the country was finally liberated, but the city of Manila was completely and utterly destroyed. It became the second most destroyed Allied capital in World War II.
And so it was said, that one Christmas night of 1946, a Filipino musician, not yet a National Artist for Music, overwhelmed with emotion, ran to one of the tallest remaining structure in the ruins of the devastated and darkened Manila, and began to write one of the saddest kundiman Christmas carol of all time.

The San Miguel Master Chorale (SMMC), now non-existent, was the first professional choir in the Philippines. It was composed of an all-Filipino roster ranging from faculty members and honor graduates of music conservatories, alumni of various choirs, choral conductors, composers, arrangers, and soloists.
The SMMC, together with the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, was disbanded in January 2007 by the San Miguel Corporation.
Beginnings
[edit]The SMMC was established in 2001 by The San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts, an organization owned by the San Miguel Corporation and committed to the enrichment of arts and culture in the Philippines. Since the SMMC is backed by the largest food and beverage company in the Philippines, many singers from other music groups were lured into joining the SMMC. In 2000, close to 400 people underwent a rigorous series of auditions before an international panel of experts, but only the top 40 made it to the final roster.
