Jascha Heifetz (; February 2 1901 – December 10, 1987) was a Russian-American violinist. Born in Vilna (Vilnius), he moved as a teenager to the United States, where his Carnegie Hall debut was rapturously received. He was a virtuoso since childhood—Fritz Kreisler, another leading violinist of the twentieth century, said on hearing Heifetz's debut, "We might as well take our fiddles and break them across our knees." He had a long and successful performing career. However, after an injury to his right (bowing) arm, he switched his focus to teaching.
Late in life, Heifetz became a dedicated teacher and a champion of socio-political causes. He publicly advocated to establish 911 as an emergency phone number, and crusaded for clean air. He and his students at the University of Southern California protested smog by wearing gas masks, and in 1967, he converted his Renault passenger car into an electric vehicle.
Early life
Heifetz was born into a Russian-Jewish family in Vilnius (Russian Empire, now Lithuania).
His father, Reuven Heifetz, was a local violin teacher and served as the concertmaster of the Vilnius Theatre Orchestra for one season before the theatre closed down. While Jascha was an infant, his father did a series of tests, observing how his son responded to his

Max Bruch composed over 200 works, including two violin concertos, the "Scottish Fantasy" for Violin and Orchestra, "Romance" for Viola and Orchestra, and "Kol Nidrei" for Cello and Orchestra.
Born on January 6, 1838, in Cologne, Bruch studied composition with Heinrich Breidenstein and Ferdinand Hiller. Greatly influenced by the works of Mendelssohn and Schumann, his first symphony received its premiere when he was just 14 years old.
Bruch enjoyed a fruitful professional career, with his works being performed throughout Europe and America. He is best known for his violin and cello concerti, and his secular oratorios.
Throughout his life, he also found an important source of his music in folk songs, on which many of his melodies are based.
Later in life, he was involved with the Liverpool Philharmonic Society from 1880 to 1883 and served as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1892, where Vaughan Williams was among his pupils. He retired from his post in 1911. Bruch died on October 2, 1920, in Berlin.
