Growing movements for independence were threatening the power of major Empires, and alliances were being challenged. On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian-backed terrorist. During the crisis that followed, Europe's leaders made a series of political, diplomatic and military decisions that would turn a localised conflict in south-east Europe into a global war. Read through the resources below to learn more about what events led to the start of the first truly global war.

    Enjoyable and inspiring!!

Last night by chance I happened to catch the latest episode of Mysteries at the Castle. The first thing that caught my attention was not only the wonderful stories they were telling. but how beautiful the footage of these castles was. Somebody defiantly put a lot of effort into researching and writing these pieces. From the get go I was enthralled. The story that really held my attention was that of William Parsons and his telescope. Amazing that what we know about space had such humble beginnings. The actor playing Parsons (Nicholas Thomas) did a great job of bringing this fascinating man to life. For one moment it was though I was along side him, building that telescope also. And he even bore a striking resemblance to the man. Again proof to me a great deal of thought and effort was put into this production. Another story I enjoyed was the one about Edward VIII, it was eye opening to see how culture and society was in those days, and how hard it must have been to be a member of royalty, it was another great performance. I will definitely be tuning in again next week. And who knows maybe I might be inspired to visit one of these wonderful castles on a future vacation.
