Etienne Charles: Creole Soul
“In the world that we live in today, it’s impossible not to be a creole, it’s impossible not to have a blend of ideas, a blend of traditions and a blend of sound or shape that determines who we are. There is a little bit of a creole in all of us …” –Etienne Charles
Extended Review by Tomas Peña – August 2013, New York.
While browsing through the music section of the New York Times I discovered a feature titled, PRESS PLAY. Much like National Public Radio’s FIRST LISTEN, PRESS PLAY debuts new, noteworthy recordings in their entirety at no cost to the listener. Among the recordings was trumpeter, composer Etienne Charles’ most recent recording, CREOLE SOUL.
With my interest piqued I made my way to Etienne’s official website (etiennecharles.com) where I learned there is much more to the talented, 20-something trumpeter than meets the eye. Etienne Charles heads to Kaiso Blues for two shows
Come Thursday, acclaimed trumpeter Etienne Charles will return to Trinidad and Tobago for two shows in one night at Kaiso Blues Café.
The intimate evening of eclectic jazz will see Charles performing with a band comprising Melanie Charles on vocals and flute; Godwin Louis on alto sax: Luther Allison on piano; Jonathan Michel on bass and Charles Haynes on drums. This band was formed for his three-week residency at Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai in 2018.
The concert comes as Charles is touring the world to promote his latest album, Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol 1.
The album, described in a May 21 article by the New York Times as Charles’ most invigorating, is an opus that continues his penchant for the rituals of his homeland, composed after four months of travel and deep research across Trinidad and Tobago to unearth the arts of Carnival that highlight the vivid and vast elements of our culture and history.
The New York Times said: “Unlike so much contemporary jazz that’s informed by global traditions, the album retains the atmosphere of restive jubilation that defines the actual event of Carnival. Mr. Charles’s band, featuring some of New York’s ace musicians, sometimes plays the pieces alone.
