Estelle sloan biography
•
Vivacious, exceptionally talented tap dancer who is best remembered for her whirling and spinning solo routine to Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" (choreographed by LeRoy Prinz) in the fictionalised musical biopic Night and Day (1946). Born to Nathaniel and Ruth Anna Sloan in Philadelphia on September 3 1919, Estelle became an internationally renowned performer. She was featured at such prestige venues as the London Palladium, Radio City Music Hall in New York, the New Chez Paree in Chicago and in the Broadway productions "Star and Garter" (June 24 1942 until December 04 1943) and "Toplitzky of Notre Dame" (at The Shubert Theater, December 26 1946 until February 15 1947), running to 609 and 60 performances, respectively. Contemporary reviews often compared her favorably to the two most famous female tappers of the period: Eleanor Powell and Ann Miller. Estelle was still around dancing in the 1950's, among others with an outfit known as the McIntyre Troupe. Not much information about her later life is available. She was married to the producer and former dancer Vic Manfred (of 'Manfred & Royal"). Estelle died on November 25 2013 at the venerable age of 94.
