When Marco Manrique started first grade in the fall, the shy 6-year-old had difficulty deciphering words on a page and finding the courage to read out loud.
Now, after three months in an after-school reading program that matches struggling kids with teenage tutors, Marco has gained the skills and confidence to read aloud to a group of fellow students.
“Mom, I read ‘Hop on Pop’!
” exclaimed Marco. He had just read the Dr. Seuss classic aloud to other children when his mother, Alicia Cruz, came to pick him up last week from the Beginning With Children Charter School in Williamsburg.
“I read it! I read it!
” he added, bursting with pride and jumping up and down with excitement.
Marco is one of about two dozen students at the charter school on Bartlett St. near Flushing Ave. who practice reading after school with older student tutors under a program run by the Reading Excellence and Discovery, or READ, Foundation.
This year, the three-year-old nonprofit organization will offer the program in 22 schools in the city, including both public and parochial ones.
