The flat in which Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle was born in 1760, which has been much transformed since then, is located at 24 rue du Commerce. Two-thirds of it was donated by André Lançon to create a cultural centre dedicated to the author and his work, which was inaugurated in 1996. Since 2011, the museum has been awarded the "Maison des Illustres" label.

The documents and objects on display in the first room recall the biography of Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle: his origins and childhood, his studies and short military career, the writing of La Marseillaise, his artistic work (texts, music, etc.) and his last years spent between the Jura and the Paris region.

The second piece looks at the posterity of the man and the hymn, and the tributes paid to them over the past two centuries.

The third and final room houses one or more objects or works of art on a temporary basis: every year, it features an exceptional "guest" with a close connection to Rouget de Lisle and/or La Marseillaise.

French writer and composer (1760–1836)

Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle^[a] (French:[klodʒozɛfʁuʒɛd(ə)lil]; 10 May 1760 – 26 June 1836) was a French army officer of the French Revolutionary Wars. Lisle is known for writing the words and music of the Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin, which would later be known as La Marseillaise and become the French national anthem.

Early life

Rouget de Lisle was born at Lons-le-Saunier, reputedly on a market day. His parents lived in the neighbouring village of Montaigu.^[5] A plaque was placed at the precise spot of his birth and a statue erected in the town's center in 1882. He was the eldest son of Claude Ignace Rouget (5 April 1735 – 6 August 1792) at Orgelet and Jeanne Madeleine Gaillande (2 July 1734 – 20 March 1811).^[6]

In 1784, he was initiated into "Les Frères discrets", a masonic lodge in Charleville, just after being promoted officer.^[7]

Career
