Amrhein was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 5, 1923 to Joseph and Kunigunda Amrhein and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before earning his BCE at Manhattan College and his MCE at Columbia University, graduating as a member of Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon.[2]
During World War II Amrhein was a Lieutenant in the Seabees seeing service in Iwo Jima as well as during the occupation of Japan. He would continue to serve through the Korean War, where he worked to construct bases at Cubi Point and Subic Bay in the Philippines.[2]

Born in 1994 in Aschaffenburg, Felix Amrhein began bassoon lessons at the age of 7, immediately inspired by the sound of the instrument. After studying for a year with Prof. Albrecht Holder at the HfM Würzburg, he began his bachelor's degree there in 2012, supported by scholarships from the Bischöfliche Studienförderung - Cusanuswerk and the Yehudi Menuhin - live music now organization. As a member of the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra, the German Federal Youth Orchestra, the Young German Philharmonic Orchestra and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, he was able to gain his first orchestral experience. In addition, he was a substitute with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and an academist with the Saxon Staatskapelle Dresden. In the 2017/18 season, he was initially engaged as principal bassoonist with the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe. Since November 2018, he has been principal bassoonist of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, he has been teaching orchestral studies and reed making at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden since September 2019 as part of a teaching assignment.
