Unser, Al(fred), Sr.

(b. 29 May 1939 in Albuquerque, New Mexico), race car driver who is one of only three four-time winners of the Indianapolis 500 and a three-time United States Auto Club (USAC) national champion.

The youngest of four sons of Jerry H. Craven, a race driver and garage owner, and Mary Craven Unser, a homemaker, Unser clearly had driving in his blood. The Unser family is a dynasty of sorts, with Unser a part of the driving clan including his father, two uncles (Louis and Joe), two brothers (Bobby and Jerry), and son, Al Unser, Jr. Six Unsers have started in the Indianapolis (Indy) 500, and older brother Bobby won the race three times.

Unser began his career driving modified stock cars on racing tracks near his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the years 1957 to 1963. He also operated a junkyard with his brother Bobby. His first successful racing excursion was in the 1960 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event in Colorado. Pikes Peak is a glorious setting for athletics, with a daunting mountain made accessible via a narrow, twisting road. Unser took second place and then, in 1964 and 1965, he won the race.

Al Unser Sr., a legend in the world of auto racing, is one of only three drivers to have won the Indianapolis 500 four times. Unser, a member of the second of three generations of Unsers to race cars, also shares the distinction of having won races on paved ovals, road courses, and dirt tracks in a single season with only two other Indy drivers. In fact, Unser managed that latter feat three years in a row—1968, 1969, and 1970. Retired since 1994 to his native New Mexico, Unser in recent years has been working to build an automobile museum on family land in Albuquerque. For this most recent venture, Unser has partnered with son, Al Jr., a racing star in his own right and sometime competitor with his father, to create a museum that will appeal to both adults and children. Before retiring, Unser Sr. compiled an enviable record on the Indy car circuit of thirty-nine wins, accumulating more than $6 million in winnings. Collectively, the Unsers are the winningest family at Indianapolis, having collected a total of nine checkered flags, or more than 10 percent of the races run at Indy.
